A Real Strong Call for Unity - These People Need Our Help

Over at TPM tonight one of the people (burnedoutdem) posted an email they just received from the Obama Campaign:

We need your help right now.

In Quincy, Illinois and surrounding areas, the river is expected to crest on Monday or Tuesday.

There are emergency sandbagging operations going on right now and
public officials have put out a call for all available volunteers. Your
help is desperately needed.

The widespread flooding in the Midwest has affected millions of
people. We have an opportunity to use our grassroots movement to make a
real impact at a time of urgent need.

If you can assist, please travel to one of these areas this weekend:

QUINCY, IL

Oakley-Lindsey Civic Center
South 3rd St. and Kentucky St.
Quincy, IL 62301
Map and Directions
Saturday and Sunday, June 14th - 15th
6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Volunteers are asked to come through the north doors of the
Oakley-Lindsey Center. Everyone will be asked to sign a registration
sheet as they enter and leave so the city can keep track of the
volunteer service.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring shovels, gloves and sturdy shoes.

NIOTA, IL

If you'd like to help sandbag in Niota you can call Hancock County emergency services at 217-357-6004 for more information.

URSA, IL

Volunteers are still needed in Ursa. The operation is underway
at Shaffer Farm, along the Ursa blacktop road, 1/8 mile west of the
North Bottoms Road.

Volunteers are also requesting cold bottled water for those who are working.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the recent flooding through the Midwest.

If you are not able to make it to Quincy but would like to help, visit the American Red Cross to donate to their relief efforts or find out how to get involved.

Thanks,

Obama for America

Since I live in California and there is no way I can get to the Midwest to help this weekend, I went to Obama's site to see what else we might do and found this as the top headline item on his site:
YOUR HELP IS URGENTLY NEEDED
For Victims of the Midwest Flood

Help the Victims of the Midwest Floods

Several Midwest states were flooded this weekend, forcing families to evacuate their homes and leave their communities.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the floods.

The American Red Cross is providing relief efforts in Indiana, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and West Virginia. Almost 1,100 workers have been deployed to help out in the Midwest.

Throughout this campaign, we have seen time and again that when ordinary people act together, they can make a difference.

You can help out now by donating or volunteering at a local shelter. Visit the Red Cross' website for more information on how to help in your town. Let's rally together to help those who need us now.

I checked Hillary's site and there is a link to the Red Cross there too. So everyone - let's put aside the bickering this weekend and see what we can do to help these people. As burnedoutdem rather eloquently put it in his/her diary at TPM:
If you have time, come and help sandbag. If you are far away or can't make the trip, please contact the Red Cross to donate blood, clothes and food. It's really, really bad out here - people have lost everything they own to wind and water, and we know we can't yet count on our government to help them (not until January, anyway).

Re: A Call to the Grassroots (none / 0)

I really liked that Obama asked his grassroots supporters to step forward.
We have an opportunity to use our grassroots movement to make a real impact at a time of urgent need.
I know that Bush is in Europe but have we even heard that the government is doing anything to help these flood victims yet?

Well, I took a peek over McCain's site.  Nothing.

I have family in Iowa but, thankfully, the worst was basements flooding.

Well, I took a peek over McCain's site. Nothing. (none / 0)

I was expecting.....

"Senator McCain says people in the Midwest affected by the flooding are on their own. 'Bootstraps were put there for a reason,' the senator said laughing.

"On Friday, Senator McCain flew over the devastation in his wife Cindy's corporate jet and wished everyone below, 'the best of luck in getting out of this mess,' from 30,000 feet."

Re: A Real Strong Call for Unity - These People Ne (none / 0)

It feels good to have everyone with a shovel.

But the damage from flooding is prevented best with long term planning and good governance.

The problems in New Orleans were almost 100% because of bad governance over time with regards to the levy walls.

No amount of unity after the levy burst was able to fix what having levies not break would have done.

The solution to America's problems is to have long term planning and good governance not a bunch of college kids with shovels.

Long term planning regarding unity is also important.

What do you propose giving the DLC wing of the party for the damage done to their leader?

Do you propose giving them shovels?

Think about this seriously because it is FAR more important than how many people show up with shovels this weekend.
